Pre-launch

BuzinessHours

When a rejected Google API application turned out to be a messaging problem, not a technical one.

Role

Product strategy & UX writing

Focus

Credibility, GTM strategy, product audit

Company

Business-discovery platform, pre-launch

The challenge

The API application wasn't the real problem. The product's credibility was.

One of the product's biggest hurdles emerged during its application for Google's API access — the initial application was rejected, blocking further development. Investigating why revealed the issue went beyond the application itself: messaging was inconsistent, the value proposition wasn't clear, and several credibility signals expected of a customer-facing platform were missing or underdeveloped.

Rather than treating the rejection as an isolated technical task, we treated it as an opportunity to strengthen how the product presented itself.

Contributions

Seven areas, from audit to go-to-market.

[audit]

Product audit

Reviewed the website and mobile app to identify gaps in messaging, UX writing, information hierarchy, and overall experience.

[messaging]

Product messaging & UX writing

Rewrote significant portions of the website and app for a clearer, more consistent experience that better communicated the product's purpose.

[structure]

Product structure

Reviewed and refined how information was organised and how users moved through key journeys.

[credibility]

Credibility & trust

Strengthened customer-facing trust signals, including the Terms of Service and a more complete Google Business Profile.

[api support]

Google API application support

Supported the team through the application process, improving presentation, documentation, and communication after the initial rejection.

[gtm]

Go-to-market strategy

Developed positioning, target audiences, messaging, launch sequencing, acquisition channels, and an adoption strategy for launch through early growth.

[product]

Product collaboration

Regularly contributed to product discussions — evaluating problems, challenging assumptions, exploring practical solutions.

Current status

Status: pre-launch, GTM strategy complete

BuzinessHours remains in active development and hasn't launched publicly. Messaging, UX writing, credibility improvements, and the go-to-market strategy are all complete and ready for execution once product development reaches the appropriate stage.

Reflection

Products are evaluated long before customers begin using them.

A product's messaging, structure, credibility, and launch strategy all influence whether people understand it, trust it, and adopt it — improving those areas isn't separate from building the product. It's part of making the product ready for the market.
